Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas in 1865 Although the “Emancipation Proclaimation” had been signed years before many Africans were still held in chatle slavery until this date. Since its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. It is now recognized as a state holiday or state holiday observance in 31 of the States and the District of Columbia.
History...On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger of the Union Army sailed into Galveston, Texas, on Galveston Island, and proclaimed liberty:
The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.
The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.
Upon hearing the news celebrations broke out all across the country. People rejoiced, cried, prayed, walked off plantations and anything else they felt like doing. It was and continues to remain a great day in our history knowing that our efforts over the years to free ourselves was not nor ever had been in vain. Don’t get it twisted this was not a “gift” that was bestowed up the “poor slaves”. Africans who were enslaved had fought for freedom since first stepping foot on the first ship. Had it not been for that consistent struggle to return to our traditional greatness the “Emancipation Proclaimation” would have never existed.
WE FREED OURSELVES they just acknowledged it!!!
