Genital Mutilation

I was speaking with a Mama after dance class and she was educating us about female genital mutilation practices (which generally were preformed beginning at the age of 8 to 10). In addition to the shear horror of having something like that done to you she also spoke of the long term effects. Among those was painful or un-enjoyable intercourse that would result from the scar tissue. And how it was less painful for them to have intercourse from the back (doggy style) however it also took away from the intimacy and caring of the act. She spoke of how face to face intercourse was preferable before outside (mainly religious and sexist) influences in many parts of the continent. Also DS was often was buying working women as not to share themselves with the customer, it did not matter who they were or what they looked like. I have also read that in some places oral sex was considered dirty.


During the conversation I found myself reevaluating my “sexual” preferences wondering if any of these spiritual scars or habits has traveled with me over my lifetimes. It is hard to imagine such barbaric beginnings to some of the most enjoyable acts. It just made me ponder certain things in my inner being.

While hearing some of the stories makes me cringe on the deepest levels I take comfort in knowing that as women and men we are constantly growing and evolving. I look forward to a time when this is no longer an issue in any part of the world.
